The 90/10 Rule: Why Your Bra Straps Dig In, and Why Tightening Them Makes It Worse
Red grooves on your shoulders, a bra that rides up in the back, the sigh of relief when it comes off at night. Almost every woman blames her straps. The real problem is somewhere else entirely.

The rule every bra designer knows
In the lingerie industry there is one simple rule: 90 percent of the support should come from the band, only 10 percent from the straps. The band around your ribs carries the weight. The straps just keep the cups in place.
A sports bra proves it. It holds everything in place through every jump, without a wire and often with thin straps. Because the band does the work.
What happens when the band is too weak
Most everyday bras have a band that is too loose, too narrow or stretches out after a few washes. Now the weight has nowhere to go but up. It hangs from your shoulders. The straps dig in, the back rides up, the wire presses into your ribs. You tighten the straps, the back rides up even more, and the grooves get deeper.
Those grooves are not a sign you need “better straps”. They are a sign your band has stopped doing its job. Shoulder pain, neck tension and a sore back at the end of the day often come from the same place.
Why it gets worse after 40
Most women wear the wrong bra size, and many have for years. Between 45 and 55 the bust changes shape and size for most women, and suddenly bras that “always fit” press, pinch and slip. Add hot flashes to a tight underwire and it’s no surprise the bra is the first thing that comes off at home.
What a bra built on the 90/10 rule feels like
We built the LUMIVE Premium Comfort Bra around this rule. A wide, firm band that lifts from underneath, so you don’t need a wire. Wide, soft straps that only carry the last 10 percent, so there’s nothing left to dig in. Seamless, so it doesn’t show under a tight top.
The thing women tell us most after the first week: they forgot they had it on. No grooves at night, no tugging at the back, no peeling it off the moment they get home.
